This paper examines how political, social and economic regime change affects lifecycles of manufacturing plants. To do that, we exploit Japan’s transition from a feudal regime to a modern regime in the late nineteenth century as a natural experiment. Using the plant-level data for 1902 including the information on the foundation year of each plant, we examine how age-size profiles of plants differ between before and after the regime change. It was found that plants grew much faster after the regime change, and that the acceleration of growth after the regime change is much larger for the plants in exporting industries, the industries intensively using steam power, and plants adopting the corporate form. These findings suggest that access to export market, access to modern technologies and availability of the modern corporate form were the channels through which the regime change affected the age-size profile of plants.
