Global Economic Shifts and Growth in Emerging Economies: An International Comparison of Structural Transformation

Outline

This project compares how global economic shifts affect growth in emerging economies from a structural transformation perspective. The global economy is undergoing historic shifts driven by technological change, the global expansion of China’s manufacturing and service sectors, and the rise of protectionism including the United States. Against this backdrop, we examine growth patterns in emerging economies by focusing on the industries that act as growth engines. Specifically, (1) to identify each country’s growth pattern, we summarize the trends in structural transformation and its key drivers behind them, and (2) to relativise these patterns, we compare similarities and differences in structural transformation. As anticipated outcomes, we first develop a typology of growth patterns to facilitate better understanding. Second, we situate each country’s growth pattern within its modern historical context and through international comparison to outline possible future trajectories.
