Growth strategies of ASEAN countries

Outline

ASEAN countries exhibit significant disparities and diversity in their levels of economic development, most belong to the middle-income category, with countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam articulating growth strategies aimed at achieving high-income status. This study employs the World Bank's "3i strategy" as an analytical framework to examine each country's strategy, verify and compare key priorities in their growth strategies, policy evolution, and the alignment between desirable strategies and actual policies, while taking into account institutional and political contexts.

Based on the idea that transition to a high-income country is a long-term, gradual process, this study compares ASEAN countries at different stages of development within the same region, revealing that growth strategies vary depending on each country's initial conditions and institutional and political systems. It offers insights for economic development policies in over 100 middle-income countries worldwide.
