Visualizing Global Value Chains: Smile Curve, Network and Revealed Comparative Advantage

他機関との共同研究成果

To visualize global value chains (GVCs), IDE-JETRO offers some GVC visualization tools at country, sector and bilateral levels based on inter-country input-output (ICIO) models and databases. These tools include smile curves, GVC networks and value-chain based Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) figures and source data which have been used in the “Global Value Chain Development Report 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023”. Examples are shown below.

1. Smile Curve Figure (example)

Smile curve tools display the value-added gains (bubble size), positions (X-axis) and value-added ratio (Y-axis) of various countries and sectors along a specific value chain.

2. GVC Network Figure (example)

Network tools illustrate the interdependency of value-added trade among countries by trading route, their dynamic changes over time and the influencing area of a specific hub country (as supply or demand center) in GVCs for a specific sector.

3 GVC-based RCA Figure (example)

Global value chain-based RCA tools indicate the relative advantage or disadvantage of a certain country in a certain category of value-added exports by trading route (traditional trade, simple GVC and complex GVC trade).

As the initial version of the Global Value Chain (GVC) visualization tools, we provide free-downloadable results for all countries/regions included in the corresponding international input-output datasets. These results cover selected sectors such as Textile, ICT, Auto, and Financial Services, and are available for various years. For a comprehensive explanation of how we generate these figures and additional details about country names, sector names, and the data sources utilized, please consult our Technical Note provided below.

2.1) Zip file for Smile Curve figures and source data based on the OECD Inter-Country Input-Output (ICIO) data, 2000-2018 (download(1.1GB))

The file name in the provided zip file (example) is as follows: “Smile Curve_2018_oecd_JPN_Motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers.png.” This filename corresponds to the smile curve figure for the 2018 Japanese motor vehicle sector, based on the OECD ICIO data.

2.2) Zip file for GVC network figures (supply center and demand center) and sources data based on the ADB multiregional Input-Output (MRIO) tables, 2000-2021 download by year: (2000, 2007-2009(320MB), 2010-2013(317MB), 2014-2017(316MB), 2018-2021(313MB))

The file name in the provided zip file for the supply center (example) is as follows: “Supply_TiVA_2021_ADB_Electrical and optical equipment.png.” This filename corresponds to the network and hubs (supply centers) of Trade in Value Added (TiVA) for the Electrical and Optical Equipment sector in 2021, based on the ADB MRIO data.

The file name in the provided zip file for the demand center (example) is as follows: “Demand_TiVA_2021_ADB_Electrical and optical equipment.png.” This filename corresponds to the network and hubs (demand centers) of Trade in Value Added (TiVA) for the Electrical and Optical Equipment sector in 2021, based on the ADB MRIO data.

2.3) Zip file for GVC based RCA figures and source data (based on the ADB multiregional Input-output tables, 2000-2021) (download(140MB))

The file name in the provided zip file (example) is as follows: “RCA_TSGT_TiVA_2021_ADB_Electrical and optical equipment.png.” This filename corresponds to the Relative Comparative Advantage (RCA) measured by TSGT (trade statistics in gross terms) and TiVA (trade in value added) for the 2021 Electrical and Optical Equipment sector, based on the ADB MRIO data.
