The Crisis of Democracy in Developing Countries
Outline
A number of developing countries have gone through democratization since the 1980s. The Third Wave of Democratization (Huntington 1991), however, did not necessarily result in consolidated democracies. Newly established democratic institutions often failed to resolve conflicts among various societal groups, and some groups tried to deviate from democratic institutions. In some cases, democratic institutions were gradually eroded, and authoritarian regimes came back. This research project aims to classify the failures of democracy and find causal mechanisms of these problems through comparative case studies.
