Refining the Extended Japan-Taiwan International Input-Output Table Using Firm-level Data

Outline

In Global Value Chain (GVC) research, East Asia is characterized by its diversity in firm sizes and complexity in ownership structures, which are not adequately captured by international input-output analysis. This is because input-output tables treat transactions between industrial sectors as aggregate values, causing heterogeneity among firms within the same industry to be overlooked. To address this challenge, this research aims to develop and refine extended international input-output tables that take firm heterogeneity into account.

In fiscal years 2021-2022, we constructed a 7-sector extended Japan-Taiwan table for 2016 as a basic analytical framework, and in fiscal years 2023-2024, we have been working on expanding it to an 87-sector classification. In this research project, we will compile three types of extended tables for the 2016 Japan-Taiwan table - by firm size, ownership structure, and trade structure - utilizing not only Economic Census data but also more detailed Basic Survey of Japanese Business Structure and Activities data. Through comparative analysis between these tables and those constructed in the 2023-2024 research project, we will examine how differences in data sources affect estimation results, aiming to establish more reliable compilation methods. Additionally, we will proceed with preparatory work for the compilation of the 2021 table.
