Cultural Capital and Social Stratification in Emerging Asian Countries: A Study from Piano Culture
Outline
This research project focuses on the role of the piano as cultural capital in emerging Asian countries where social stratification is progressing. Can the arguments presented by Bourdieu, such as "cultural distinction" and "cultural reproduction," be applied to the actual situations surrounding the piano in emerging Asian countries? We will examine the above questions by looking at the characteristics of piano culture in six countries (South Korea, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia) from multiple perspectives in relation to economic and social conditions such as the piano industry, social stratification, education system and gender norms in it, and aspects of family.
