The Overseas Investments of Chinese Companies in the Context of the Restructuring of International Division of Labor
Outline
In the wake of the US-China conflicts, the international division of labor has been being significantly restructured. In terms of production, the global supply chain, which has been concentrated in China, is being decentralized. In terms of innovation, both the US and China are rebuilding their own innovation systems around the research and development of cutting-edge technologies. In this situation, Chinese manufacturers, who are important players in the global supply chain, and Chinese tech companies engaged in the research and development of cutting-edge technologies have begun to make large-scale foreign direct investments. Their destinations are not only emerging countries but also the US and its allies. This has a major impact on the restructuring of the global supply chain and the direction of the US-China high-tech competition. In this research project, we will elucidate the actual situation of Chinese companies’ overseas invesments by focusing on Japan and Southeast Asia as typical investment destinations, and electric vehicles and smart logistics equipment as typical industries so that look at the direction of the restructuring of the international division of labor.
