Japan and Taiwan's Economic Relations: Horizontalization, Diversification and Increased embeddedness

Outline

Japan and Taiwan are neighbouring and have a strong economic relationship that is one of the most important relations between two countries . This project’s goal is to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the long-term process of Japan and Taiwan’s economic relations including the current events such as a semiconductor fab in Kumamoto jointly invested in by TSMC, Sony and Denso.

This project focuses on horizontalization, diversification and increased embeddedness of Japan-Taiwan economic relations. Horizontalization means more equalized and more bilateral relations. Diversification represents increased varieties of fields and forms of economic ties between Japanese and Taiwanese firms. Embeddedness includes upgrade and indigenization of Japanese companies’ subsidies in Taiwan.

The project aims to describe the evolutionary process of Japan and Taiwan’s economic relations from these viewpoints. The product is composed of analysis of trade and direct investment statistics as well as case studies on some industries and firms. The industries and firms are approached by investigation of literature and materials and interviews with the persons and organizations concerned.
