The Business Strategy of Merachnats and the Weakly-organized Market in Iran
Outline
This study focuses on the management strategies of distributors and the state of the ‘weakly- organized’ market in Iran. Tehran, the capital of Iran, is the starting point of the domestic distribution network for textile and apparel products. There are clusters of wholesaler stores classified by product in various locations, including Tehran's traditional market, the Great Bazaar, each of which has become a distribution hub that boasts national recognition. However, the distributors (merchants) based in these markets rarely try to expand their sales business by stabilizing supply through entering into the production business themselves or bringing the producers into own business group. This study examines why distributors in the markets do not organize producers and proactively create demand, and how not doing so helps maintain the business of individual distributors and the overall operation of the market. This study is to clarify what kind of rationality these strategies have through semi-structured interviews with the distributors.
