Features of New Businesses in Emerging Economies: A Comparative Study of Indonesia and Vietnam

Outline

The growth of start-ups has become a global phenomenon. With respect to start-ups in emerging economies, the literature has emphasized the role of entrepreneurs who have studied and worked in the U.S. and other developed countries. This study engages in a comparative analysis of start-ups in two emerging economies, namely, Indonesia and Vietnam, focusing on the question of how start-ups in these economies are coping with challenges such as the shortage of resources and underdeveloped institutions. Specifically, by focusing on the attributes and backgrounds of the founders and the business areas that the start-ups are engaged in, this study seeks to shed light on the similarities and differences between the two countries and analyze what domestic and international factors that account for the emergence of start-ups.
