Water and Geopolitics in the Middle East and Nile Basin: Local Actors, Middle East Powers and Superpowers(2020_2_40_007)

Outline

This research project investigates the international dimensions of water politics in the Nile River basin by examining the role of non-riparian states in influencing hydro-hegemony and transboundary water relations. Particular attention is paid to the rising influence of the Arab Gulf states as well as private investments from non-basin countries in the Nile River basin, examining their impact on conflict and cooperation over transboundary water resources in Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia. The research emphasizes the need to link the Middle East and Horn of Africa regions in analyses of changing hydro-hegemonic configurations and the control of water resources among riparian states on the Blue Nile.
