Multiple transformation processes in South Africa-Japan relations in the period of transition from apartheid to democracy(2020_2_40_009)

Outline

This study will analyze the processes of change in South Africa-Japan relations in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which was a transition period from apartheid to democracy in South Africa. Following the transnational relations approach, which criticizes state-centrism in international relations theory and instead emphasizes the importance of non-state actors’ roles in international society, this study will examine not only the conventional government-to-government diplomatic relations between the two countries but also the roles played by non-state actors, including those in liberation movements, anti-apartheid movements, and business organizations.
