Water and Geopolitics in the Middle East and Nile Basin: Local Actors, Middle East Powers and Superpowers(2020_2_40_007)
Outline
This research project addresses the international dimensions of water politics in the Nile River basin. It looks into the role of non-riparian states in influencing hydro-hegemony and transboundary water relations. Particular attention is paid to the rising influence of the Arab gulf states and private investment from non-basin countries in the Nile basin, examining their impact on conflict and cooperation over transboundary water resources between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. The research emphasizes the need for linking both the Middle East and Horn of Africa regions in analyzing changing hydro-hegemonic configurations and the control of water resources among riparian states on the Blue Nile.
