Vocational Education, Employment and Economic Development in the Philippines(2019_2_40_009)

Outline

The government of the Philippines has aimed to become a higher-middle-income country in 2022 and to eradicate poverty in 2040. However, the country must tackle the need to diminish disparities between its National Capital Region (NCR, i.e., the metro Manila area) and other areas with regard to employment opportunities and toward raising decent incomes, as well as toward developing human capital for further contribution to inclusive/sustainable growth.

In this research project, we earnestly analyze changes in the regional labor markets/employment opportunities and the relationship with economic development since the 2000s based on data on regional labor market/industrial structures and technical and vocational education and training (TVET). We will then attempt to understand bottlenecks toward improving employment opportunities and policy implications, especially for the regional areas, where higher education is less accessible compared with the NCR.
