Chinese Village Collectives and Resource-driven Rural Development in the Post-opening-up Era (2019_1_40_009)

Outline

This study aims to evaluate the role of Chinese village collectives as a basic unit for rural development in the post-opening-up period. Under a unique socialist public tenure system, Chinese villages have been responsible for developing the local economies and for providing public services to local residents by utilizing provided, collectively owned resources, such as land, much like an enterprise. Based on case studies both in coastal areas and inner parts of China, this study will try to clarify the availability and challenges of this resource-driven village development model from the perspective of the efficiency of resource management and the equity of profit distribution among members.
