The Role of Suppliers in Global Value Chains (2018_2_40_005)

Outline

The purpose of this project is to produce a collection of papers that provide new theoretical and empirical insights into the roles that suppliers play in global value chains (GVCs). By engaging in in-depth investigation of the evolution of selected sectors over time in which suppliers have played active roles and in synthesising these and other empirical studies with relevant theoretical literature, the project seeks to shed light on the conditions under which suppliers increase returns from innovation and reconfigure value chain governance. By doing this, the project attempts to challenge the conventional GVC literature that has regarded suppliers as passive and subordinate actors in the face of the overwhelming power exercised by leading companies.
