Mandatory Primaries and Satisfaction with Democracy: Evidence from Argentina (2017_1_40_001)
Outline
Does the introduction of mandatory primaries improve voters' perception of democracy? Insisting on the importance of transparency in the candidate selection process, some countries have made primaries for national elections compulsory. However, the existing studies have not shown a causal link between the introduction of mandatory primaries and people's satisfaction with democracy. This research project aims at unpacking such causal links with a focus on the case of Argentina, which started to use mandatory primaries for national elections in 2011.
