Land Policies in Post-Cold War Africa
Outline
After the end of the Cold War, the land policies in a number of African countries have changed. Some countries have adopted new land laws aimed at strengthening individual rights for land use, while others have implemented land redistribution policies for small-scale peasants. These policy changes have been made against the backdrop of recent political developments, including democratization and marketization, as well as a greater focus on land issues in the context of post-conflict peace-building. This research project attempts to clarify the recent land policies in African countries and examines the consequences. For this purpose, the members of the project have investigated the following inquiries: 1) what kind of land problems have taken place in the country, 2) what are policies for handling such problems, and 3) what have the consequences of the policies been.
