About this book
About this book
In October 2024, the government of Indonesia changed hands, with Joko Widodo (Jokowi) completing his two-term, 10-year presidency and Prabowo Subianto assuming office as the new president. Coinciding with this change in regime, this volume examines Indonesia from three perspectives. First, we evaluate the Jokowi administration, investigating topics such as politics, the economy, civil society, diplomacy, and environmental initiatives. Second, we analyze the electoral campaigns, voting behavior, and characteristics of the elected members of parliament in both the legislative and presidential elections held in February 2024. Finally, we examine the characteristics of the new Prabowo administration. Based on this analysis, this book provides a broad range of perspectives necessary for analyzing current and future trends in Indonesia.

Preface
Preface
This book is the outcome of a joint research project conducted at the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE) in FY2023-24. In Indonesia, general elections have been held every 5 years since 1999, immediately following the end of the Soeharto era of developmental authoritarianism. Direct presidential elections were introduced in 2004, and democratic electoral processes have remained stable without significant turmoil.
IDE has organized joint research projects for these 5-year elections, making the findings publicly available. The previous general and presidential elections in 2019 were considered to be a referendum on the first-term achievements of President Joko Widodo (commonly known as Jokowi). The findings of the first joint research project were published as “Indonesia’s 2019 Elections: The Re-election of Joko Widodo amid Deepening Polarization” (Koichi Kawamura ed., IDE, 2020). The present volume embodies the findings of the joint research group established to analyze the 2024 elections.
This book comprises 15 chapters, including an introduction and conclusion, along with some supplementary materials at the end. The content of this book can be broadly divided into three parts. First, we assess the two-term, 10-year Jokowi presidency from various perspectives. Next, we analyze the campaign activities and voting behavior during the 2024 general and presidential elections. Finally, we examine the characteristics of the new administration of Prabowo Subianto, who took office in October 2024. This volume’s content, which is rich in both quality and scope, is attributable to the involvement of 14 researchers from inside and outside IDE in the joint research project.
That we have successfully brought this research to publication once again is first and foremost thanks to the tremendous cooperation of everyone who participated in the research project. Additionally, the editorial staff at IDE’s Publication Division, Academic Information Center, carefully reviewed each manuscript and provided valuable comments. We wish to express our sincere gratitude once more.
Finally, this book is freely available online. In addition, some of the research project’s findings have previously been published as articles in the “Indonesia’s 2024 Elections” special feature timed with the February 2024 elections on IDE Square, the organization’s web magazine. We encourage readers to download this book and refer to it as needed, together with the seven special feature articles on the IDE Square. Although there is a cost, a printed copy of the book is also available. Those interested can order the print-on-demand version through Sanseido Book Store On Demand, Rakuten Books, or Amazon. We hope that reading this book will deepen your understanding of contemporary Indonesia.
