Previous research

I obtained my master's degree from the Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies at Kyoto University in 2020. My thesis focused on the rise of political Islam in Indonesia following democratization. I have also been examining the political polarization between pluralists and Islamists, as well as the subsequent democratic decline in Indonesia. My findings have been published in the Journal of Indonesian Islam and an edited volume by ISEAS Publishing.

Current research projects

My research focuses on understanding the socio-political interests of Islamists and moderate Muslims with a particular focus on Indonesia. Drawing on Symbolic Threat Theory and Social Identity Theory, I examine how perceived status threats shape their agendas, rhetoric, and religious interpretations through identity consolidation. I employ survey data analysis, fieldwork, and case studies to contribute to theories of intergroup relations and political polarization.
