Africa in the ‘Global South’: Potentials and Constraints of African Development in the Changing World
On 12 February 2025, the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO), The World Bank, The Asahi Shimbun Company co-hosted an international Symposium titled “Africa in the ‘Global South’: Potentials and Constraints of African Development in the Changing World.”
This symposium brought together researchers and members of an international organization and mass media who have been involved in Africa and discuss the present and future of Africa. What potentials and opportunities exist in Africa, and what are the factors that may prevent their realizations? What challenges do African countries need to overcome in order to become a continent that bears the future of the planet? Later in 2025, the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) will be held in Yokohama. It was a good opportunity to use this occasion to rethink the relationship between Japan and Africa.
On this page, you can access videos of the keynote addresses and panel discussions delivered at the symposium.
