Geo-Economic Dataset for Asia

Data Sources and Notes : Myanmar

Administrative Divisions

Myanmar is divided into seven states and seven regions at the primary administrative division level and 64 districts at the second level. We divide Yangon into North, South, West, and East and compile data for 67 divisions.

GDP

National-level nominal GDP in 2005 was taken from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) website ( http://www.adb.org/sites/default/files/ki/2012/pdf/MYA.pdf ) and distributed to each district using the following method. GDP data were first divided into agricultural and non-agricultural GDP using data from the ADB website. Then, agricultural GDP was distributed to each district using the sown area in the Agricultural Census 2003. For non-agricultural GDP, we used data on light emissions from nighttime satellite images provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A more detailed explanation is described in Kumagai et al. (2012).

Population

National-level population data in 2005 were taken from “total population” on the ADB website. We appropriately distributed this population to each district on the basis of the data from other official statistics.

Area

Area was calculated tentatively from the shape file provided by Global Administrative Unit Layers, FAO.
