Multilayers of Contemporary Vietnamese Society: Expanding Industrial Society and Disparities in Rural Areas
Outline
Inequality in Vietnam exhibits distinct spatial characteristics. According to classical economic development theory, industrialization and urbanization tend to increase the disparity between urban and rural areas. However, since industrialization gained momentum in Vietnam in the 2000s, inequality has expanded within rural areas rather than between urban and rural areas. Why did inequality widen within rural areas during Vietnam's industrialization period, contrary to theoretical assumptions? What factors determined this widening inequality, and through what processes did it emerge? This study aims to empirically answer these questions and highlight the characteristics of contemporary Vietnamese rural and overall society.
