Impacts of Taiwan and Hong Kong issues for the U.S.-China relations

Outline

This study focuses on the impact of Taiwan and Hong Kong affairs on the U.S.-China relations and tries to explain the reason of the up-and-down process, in the last decades, and the escalation of tension, in recent years, between the two states.

Existing research and discussions often focus on the US-China diplomatic relationship and military balance , and consider the Taiwan issue as a factor to promote the tension. However, the US-China relations showed the repeated ups-and-downs of tension until 2017.

The key factor is Hong Kong as a “brake” reducing the tension between the U.S.-China and Ma Ying-jeou administration in Taiwan, which had same claim as China, not U.S., on the disputein South China Sea. In other words, the issues on Hong Kong and Taiwan have essential roles in the grand strategy of China to obtain "maritime hegemony".

This study will verify the hypothesis above and also try to show the future prospect of the U.S.-China relations.
