Gender Differences in Commuting Constraints and their Economic Impact: An Application of Quantitative Urban Models

Outline

Women tend to opt for shorter commuting distance and times compared to men, displaying greater sensitivity to changes in commuting distances. Previous studies have demonstrated that narrowing these gender disparities in commuting constraints can contribute to reducing the gender wage gap. On the other hand, changes in commuting constraints can impact not only labor income but also reshape the spatial distribution of economic activities, potentially influencing the welfare of urban areas. This study aims to quantitatively assess the impact of gender differences in commuting constraints on regional economies, employing quantitative urban economic models and data from Japan and Indonesia.
