Challenges for SMEs in the Gulf Arab States
Outline
This study analyzes why SMEs have not been developed in the Gulf Arab countries, which are monarchies, from the perspective of financial development and inadequate access to the financial sector under non-democratic governments, particularly from the approach of SMEs finance theory, focusing on the market structure of financial markets. While using the basic analytical framework of banking market analysis and SMEs finance analysis conducted for developed and developing countries, we will also focus on (1) corporate-financial institution relations through the connections of ruling royal families and influential private families and (2) financial intermediation by Islamic financial institutions, which are becoming increasingly specialized. By clarifying the relationship between SMEs financing and the structure of regional banking markets, which has not been the focus of previous studies on the Gulf Arab countries, we aim to provide academic implications for research on SMEs finance in emerging and developing
