Money, Networks, and Power: Understanding Informal Exchange in Kazakhstan(2021_2_40_016)

The purpose of this study is to publish a monograph in English on informal exchange in Kazakhstan, where the pervasiveness of bribery, cronyism, and clientelism has emerged as a serious social problem. This study examines why and how ordinary citizens resort to informal payments and connections to get thing done in everyday life or at work. This project also aims to elucidate the structural context in which bribery has become a de facto norm, and is institutionalized and reproduced. The proposed book will be based on previously published journal articles and a monograph in Japanese with substantial additions and revisions.
