ASEAN Centrality in a Comparative Perspective (2020_2_40_021)

Outline

Existing studies on “ASEAN Centrality” fail to examine whether ASEAN actually has centrality in institution-building diplomacy in Asia-Pacific. This is mainly because ASEAN lacks comparative perspectives. The proposed study first generalizes the concept of centrality in regional international relations and then examines whether a certain regional institution has centrality in the formation of regional institutions. We will compare the ASEAN and Mekong regions, which is the subset of the former. The ASEAN and Mekong regions will also be compared with other regions, such as those in Europe and Africa.
