Sub-standard Fertilizer and Agricultural Performance: Evidence from Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa (2018_2_40_016)

Outline

In this report, we investigate the expanded use of sub-standard fertilizer in the market and possible consequences on application and agricultural performance in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Low-quality fertilizers discourage farmers to adopt modern technologies, and this leads to stagnant productivity growth. Based on careful observations and quantitative evidence from field surveys, we discuss the potential causes and consequences of the prevalence of sub-standard fertilizer. We also examine the role and effectiveness of the regulations and the inspection-related institutions in dealing with this widely observed issue. Our goal is to provide valuable information and implications for policies to address the problem of sub-standard inputs in the developing world.
