Development of an Agri-food System and Integration of the Supply Chains: Cases from Latin America

Outline

In Latin America, important changes have occurred in the agriculture and food sector (agri-food system) in recent years due to economic growth and the development of national and international markets. In response to these changes, supply chains from production to consumption in the agri-food system are also changing. In traditional supply chains, the actors involved in production, processing, distribution and sales are connected through open and spot markets. In recent years, however, we have observed cases in which a leading actor in the chain coordinates the flow with the other actors through agreement, contract and ownership. We call this phenomenon supply chain integration. By comparing three case studies of supply chain integration in Peru, this study analyzes the factors that facilitated the integration and the impact of the integration from a viewpoint of the development of the agri-food sector.
