About this book

About this book

In recent years, international input-output table s have increasingly been relied upon as a useful data source and tool for analyzing the expansion and deepening of international production networks. In this book, we explored a methodology for updating international input-output tables that enables the use of the latest data, and analyzed international production networks by using the updated international input-output table for the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to analysis using new data, this book aims to contribute to the preparation of various international input-output tables, and to analyses using those data, by presenting a general methodology for table updates that is highly versatile.

Preface

Preface

The purpose of this book is to explore a methodology for updating international input-output tables, specifically for the Asia-Pacific region, and to analyze international production networks in this region using the updated international input-output table.
In recent years, with the expansion and deepening of international production networks, international input-output tables have increasingly been relied upon as a useful data source and tool for analyzing both the Global Value Chain for the international division of labor and the Global Supply Chain for optimizing the procurement of raw materials production and the sale of finished goods and products.
The Institute of Developing Economies has constructed international input-output tables for the Asia-Pacific region (the Asian table) since the 1970s, which have been widely used for analyses of international production networks in this region. However, the target year of the most recent Asian table available is 2005, which hinders the analysis of changes in international production networks that have occurred since then. While international organizations and other research institutions have also begun to compile international input-output tables in recent years, it is difficult to completely replace the Asian table owing to differences across tables such as the target countries/regions, sector classifications, and target years.
Against this background, this book examines the methodology for updating international input-output tables, and analyzes international production networks using the updated Asian table. In addition to analyses using new data, this book aims to contribute to the preparation of various international input-output tables, and to analyses using those data, by presenting a general methodology for table updates that is highly versatile.
Finally, the authors would like to thank two anonymous in-house referees for their helpful comments and suggestions. We would also like to express our gratitude to Mr. Kenji Ikegami of the Publication Division for his kind support in the process of editing and proofreading.
