International Symposium

Towards Sustainable Development and International Cooperation: Papua New Guinea at 50 Years of Independence

In the Pacific Islands, geopolitical interest is growing, particularly with China’s increasing influence as a new donor. In addition, the impact of climate change is increasingly recognized as a tangible threat, drawing international attention to the sustainable development in the region. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious impact on tourism and other industries, and has also revealed the weakness of domestic governance, including healthcare and education. Furthermore, the decline in U.S. development assistance is also beginning to affect the Pacific Islands.

The Leaders’ Declaration at the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10), held in Tokyo last year, reaffirmed that climate change is the single greatest threat to the region and emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation for both mitigation and adaptation. In response, initiatives such as support for the expansion of social-issue-driven startup enterprises in the Pacific region are being developed.

This symposium will focus on Papua New Guinea, which marks its 50th anniversary of independence and is gaining attention as a resource exporting country. Through the presentations and discussion, we will examine the challenges of achieving sustainable development, the current regulatory environment and climate change measures.

We look forward to your participation.
