International Symposium

Sustainable Development and Value Chains: Rethinking from Human Rights and the Environment

* This seminar will be held in hybrid format (in-person and online).

The registration is closed.

While transnational value chains have been expanded, social problems such as environmental and human rights issues have arisen in the value chain, and their cause and impacts transcend national borders. We need to closely attention the commonality, connectivity, and comprehensiveness of environmental and human rights issues. The UN resolution in 2022 declared access to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is a universal human right, and confirmed the inseparable relationship between the environment and human rights. Sustainable development requires a comprehensive approach involving multiple stakeholders across the entire value chain to eliminate the adverse impact of economic activities on society.

The symposium will feature Dr. Surya Deva, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development, as a keynote speaker for a comprehensive discussion on sustainable development from the perspective of the environment and human rights. The adverse impact of economic activities has a greater impact on people in the Global South. In the panel, we will comprehensively discuss environmental due diligence, including extended producer responsibility with respect to waste, and human rights due diligence. How companies can work, and what policies should be implemented to enable cross-border value chains more sound, resilient and sustainable? Please join our discussion with panelists from business, government agency, and experts from Asia.

We look forward to your participation.
