Data Sources and Notes : Thailand

Administrative Divisions

In the Thai geographical segmentation, the primary administrative division includes 75 provinces and one special administrative unit, Bangkok. While GEDA adopts this administrative division, in 2011, the 75 provinces were reclassified into 76 provinces.

GDP

Regional GDP data for agriculture and other industries excluding manufacturing are obtained from the “Gross Regional and Provincial Product,” which includes information on GDP for agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and services at the province level. In this data source, while agriculture and services could be subdivided into two sectors and 12 sectors, respectively, data on manufacturing GDP are not available at the more detailed sector level. The Industrial Census (National Statistical Office), which was conducted in 1964, 1997, and 2007, presents data on value added in manufacturing at the more detailed sector level (ISIC four-digit level) by region (Central, North Eastern, Northern, and Southern). By employing this Industrial Census in 2007, we calculate the share of each manufacturing sector’s value added in total manufacturing by region. Then, by multiplying this region-level share by the province-level total manufacturing GDP obtained from the “Gross Regional and Provincial Product,” we obtain provincial GDP data at the more detailed manufacturing sector level.

Population

Data are taken from the 2010 Population and Housing Census, which reports the population according to sex, age, education level, and occupation at the county level.

Area

Data are taken from the Statistical Yearbook Thailand 2005.
