Geo-Economic Dataset for Asia

Data Sources and Notes : Malaysia

Administrative Divisions

Malaysia is divided into 13 states and 3 federal territories at the primary level. We treat Putrajaya as a part of Selangor, meaning that there are 15 divisions in the dataset.

GDP

The base data for GDP by state and industry is the National Accounts Gross Domestic Product By State 2005–2010, provided by the Department of Statistics (DOS), Malaysia. In these statistics, GDP is divided into 10 sectors, although the manufacturing sector is treated as one sector. Therefore, we divide the manufacturing sector by value added in the Annual Survey of Manufacturing Industries, aggregated for each state by the DOS. For service sectors, we need to separate:

(020) Electricity, Gas, and Water Supply from (022) Trade and Transport, Communication
(023A) Accommodation and Food Service Activities from (023C) Other Services
(023B) Financial and Insurance Activities from (023C) Other Services

As an alternative method, we could use national-level GDP by industry to separate the above industries.

Population

Data are taken from Population Quick Info
( http://www.statistics.gov.my/portal/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=129&lang=en ), provided by the DOS.

Area

Data are taken from “Area by State” in the Yearbook of Statistics , the DOS.
