Data Sources and Notes : Korea
Administrative Divisions
For the Korean geographical segmentation, the first administrative division includes one special city, six metropolitan cities, eight provinces, and one special autonomous province. Each of these is subdivided into cities, counties, and districts. GEDA adopts the first administrative division.
GDP
Regional GDP data for agriculture and other industries excluding manufacturing are obtained from “Gross Regional Domestic Product and Expenditure,” which includes information on GDP for agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and services at the first administrative segmentation level. From this data source, while services could be subdivided into 14 sectors, data on manufacturing GDP were not available at the more detailed sector level. The “Report on Mining and Manufacturing Survey” of enterprises that have at least 10 employees provided data on value added in manufacturing at the more detailed sector level. By employing this report, we calculated the share of each manufacturing sector’s value added in total manufacturing by region. Then, by multiplying this share by total manufacturing GDP obtained from “Gross Regional Domestic Product and Expenditure,” we obtained regional GDP data at the more detailed manufacturing sector level.
Population
Data are taken from the 2005 Population and Housing Census Report, which provides details on the population according to sex, age, education level, and religion at the second administrative segmentation.
Area
Data are taken from the Korea Statistical Yearbook 2005.
