Data Sources and Notes : India

Administrative Divisions

There are 35 administrative divisions in India at the primary level and 640 at the secondary level, as of February 2011. The number of divisions has increased from 593 in 2001. In this dataset, we compiled data for 583 districts based on the administrative divisions in 2001. However, we had no GDP data for Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman, Diu, and Lakshadweep. We thus combined nine districts in Delhi into one, while Mumbai, Bangalore, and Midnapore were integrated from two districts to one.

Our downloadable data are aggregated at the state level because of copyright issues.

GDP

There are no official data on GDP by industry and district. Therefore, we used similar data compiled by Indicus Analytics Pvt. Ltd. These data from Indicus make it possible to compile GDP by industry and district, except:

  • The manufacturing sector is treated as one sector.
  • We cannot divide (22) Trade and Transport, Communication and (23A) Accommodation and Food Service Activities in the GSM Standard Industrial Classification.

For the manufacturing sector, we divided industries using the number of employees from the Economic Census 2005 aggregated by district and industry.

Population

Population by district in 2005 is calculated based on the population growth rate for each district using the 2001/2011 Census data.

Area

Data are taken from the 2011 Census data.
