Administrative Divisions
The boundary is taken at the prefecture level. Excluding Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, there are 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, and four municipalities (Beijing, Shanghai, Tensing, and Chongqing). 1
GDP
Total GDP for each province is taken from the China City Statistical Yearbook 2006. The data unavailable at this source are taken from the yearbooks of each province. When we disaggregate GDP data into sectors, regions, or both, the lack of published data may mean that we utilize alternative sector- and region-level data such as employment. We may include quotients in the dimension of sectors/regions and then multiply by the GDP of the province or prefecture. This procedure is applied when we cannot obtain relevant data. For this process, we use the yearbooks and economic censuses of each province or municipality. For example, when the official GDP data are available at a prefectural level, we take the sectorial employment share in each prefecture from the Economic Census 2004 and multiply this with the prefectural GDP.
Population/Area
Data are taken from the “China City Statistical Yearbook 2006.” If unavailable at this source, the data are taken from the 2006 yearbooks of each province.
