Previous research
In my dissertation, I studied politics in dictatorships. Specifically, I examined the causes and consequences of political reforms in Mexico under the Institutional Revolutionary Party and in the USSR under the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Current research projects
I have two long-term research projects. One is a study on the origin of political parties, which are crucial to the function of democracies and dictatorships alike. The other is on the innovative idea of selecting politicians by a lottery, also known as sortition. Although these two studies may seem quite different from each other, I see them both as research themes that address the “crisis of democracy” facing the world today.
