Research Fellows (Development Studies) Recruitment Guidelines FY 2026

Positions offered

  • A few research staff members engaging in studies on developing and emerging economies, and/or international economy.
  • Positions are offered as tenured.

Job descriptions

  • Research on developing and emerging economies, and/or international economy, as well as research related duties.
    * In principle, the place of work is IDE-JETRO in Chiba, Japan. There are also overseas assignments for on-site research.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or are expected to receive a Ph.D. by March 2026, in Economics.
  • Applicants of any nationality are accepted but must be able to perform the duties in Japanese or English.

2. Documents: All applicants must provide the followings by uploading through the URL above.

  • (1) Curriculum vitae with a recent photograph (Download a template on our website)
  • (2) Motivation letter (about 800 words, download a template on our website).
  • (3) A list of your academic publications, including books, monographs, research papers, and other works written in English or Japanese.
  • (4) One copy of the abstracts of major writings (up to three items, about 400 words for each).
  • (5) A copy of major writings (Ph.D. dissertation or major academic publications including book, book chapter, monograph, research paper, or refereed article in English or Japanese) up to three items.
  • (6) A letter of recommendation (optional).
    * A copy of the certificate of Ph.D. will be requested after a job offer is made.

3. Instruction to submit the above documents:

  • (1) All the documents described above must be submitted as electronic data by uploading through the URL above.
  • (2) Confirmation of receiving will be sent by e-mail.

Application period

All applications must be received by 17:00 (GMT+9), 31 July 2025.

Selection procedure

  • (1) Initial screening: Selection based on submitted materials and major writings. (Planned in August)
  • (2) Final review: A presentation session and the final interview in English or Japanese on a same day. (Planned in September-October)

Starting date

1 April 2026 (negotiable).

Other terms and conditions of employment

Salary: Determined by age and work experiences as per IDE-JETRO regulations.

Working hours: Discretionary working schedule system

  • * The method of performing work and time allocation (including punch-in/out times) are left to the discretion of the employee.
  • * The deemed working hours per day, including deemed overtime, is 8 hours 35 minutes (60 minutes lunch break.)
  • * The deemed overtime per month is 15 hours (certain conditions apply.)

Holidays: Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, year-end and New Year holidays

Paid leaves: Annual, Summer, and other miscellaneous leaves specified by the law

Welfare: Eligible for National Health Insurance, National Unemployment Insurance, Workers’ Compensation insurance, Employee’s Pension Plan, Corporate Pension Fund, a dormitory for singles and families.

Trial period: Yes (6 months, no difference in working conditions)

Passive smoking prevention measures: No smoking indoors (special outdoor smoking areas available)

Other: Other matters are in accordance with the organization
