A Case Study of Community-Based Weaving Industry in West Java
The technological innovation in wet-rice growing in Indonesia which finally realized domestic self-sufficiency in rice production in the middle of 1980s was not successful in solving employment problems in rural Indonesia. Thus, it was hoped that development of the rural nonfarm sector, in particular rural industrialization, would provide employment for the increasing labor force, especially women and landless people, and as a result improve income distribution in the rural areas. The purpose of this volume of research is to analyze the results of a survey carried out in a village of West Java concerning the development of its rural weaving industry. The focus of the study is the growth of the nonfarm sector and rural industrialization, in an attempt to investigate the possibility of the development of weaving enterprises into a viable rural industry based on the idea of community-based industry.
How has the rural weaving industrial community responded to the drastic changes in the economic policy of the Suharto administration since the late 1960s marked by severe competition with modern, large-scale factories? Why do the producers in the rural weaving industry remain so small in scale? What is the relationship between the development of part-time farming and the rural weaving industry? What has been the influence exerted on the survey village's income distribution and the allocation of its force of production by the rural textile industry and other nonfarm activities? What is the direction of the future development for the rural textile industry? This volume attempts to answer these questions through a detailed analysis based on field work.
