Strengthening India-Japan Economic Relations: Opportunities and Challenges in Context of Changing Global Order
* This seminar will be held in hybrid format (in-person and online).
The registration is closed.
India as an emerging major power has been gaining attention of a wide section of Japanese society. While the bilateral relations between India and Japan are expected to generate win-win outcome under the increasingly uncertain international situation, both India and Japan have own economic and political imperatives to follow, which determine the policy options as well as scope of the bilateral relationship. In order to further strengthen the relationship in depth and width, it is important to know the mutual positions and perspectives.
In this symposium, a keynote speech will outline the contours of India-Japan cooperation based on the long-term vision. The keynote will be followed by two sessions comprised of two presentations each from India and Japan.
The first session will examine the current state of the economic engagement in both India and Japan. The first presentation will focus on the economic activities of Japanese firms in India, while the second presentation will shift our focus to India’s economic activities in Japan. Whereas the scope of mutual engagement is expanding, there are areas with potential for growth. The session will also identify the challenges perceived by both actors.
In the second session, we will focus on connectivity, an area where both India and Japan give high importance, yet unexplored fully, in the contexts of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific as well as individual politico-economic development. India’s global and regional initiatives related to connectivity agenda will be discussed in the first presentation. India’s Northeast and the Bay of Bengal are among the areas where joint efforts by India and Japan have been promoted over a decade. Compared with Southeast Asia, South Asia is one of the least connected regions despite the shared history and ethnic, social and geographical connectedness. The presentation in the last session will discuss the experiences of Southeast Asia, and the opportunities and challenges which India and Japan have in the connectivity development over the region.
We look forward to your participation.
