Seminar on the National Big Project of Indonesia

Challenges of Economic Cooperation in National Projects of the Global South: The Case of Indonesia's New Capital Construction

This seminar aims to enhance economic cooperation between Japan and Indonesia, a major country in the Global South, by focusing on the national project of building the new capital in Indonesia.

In August 2019, the Indonesian government announced the relocation of the capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan province in southeastern Borneo. The plan is to move government agencies, information and communication agencies, and higher education and research institutions to a location spanning Penajam Paser Utara Regency and Kutai Kartanegara Regency. This grand plan aims to gradually relocate related institutions starting from 2024, and a complete move by 2045, the 100th anniversary of the country's independence.

However, there are some uncertainties about whether the new capital construction will continue after the change of administration in 2024 and the feasibility of continuing the project, leading many companies to explore ways to get involved. Therefore, this seminar will invite experts of Indonesian politics and economy to discuss the new capital construction's current status, prospects, and challenges. We will also invite officials from the local governments (Government of Kutai Kartanegara Regency and Penajam Paser Utara Regency) to gain insights into how local communities perceive the capital construction and the issues they face.

The registration is closed.
