The 5th Mekong Dialogue “Stakeholder Engagement and Governance: Lessons from the 2024 Flood and Beyond”

IDE-JETRO has co-organized the 5th Mekong Dialogue with the School of Social Innovation, Mae Fah Luang University on February 26-27. The Mekong Dialogue is a platform to discuss a wide range of complex issues such as water, food, energy, and climate change in the Mekong River Basin.

Initiated by MFU from 2019, the dialogue marked its fifth year in 2025. This year, it was organized in partnership with IDE-JETRO under the theme: " Stakeholder Engagement and Governance: Lessons from the 2024 Flood and Beyond ".

The event was attended by about 200 (total in two days) people, both onsite and online. NGO practitioners and researchers from the Mekong region countries (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand) and related countries such as China, Japan, and USA, and the local stakeholders gave presentations about their activities and research.

On the first day of the workshop, presentations and discussions were given by local stakeholders and NGOs, focusing on the 2024 floods in northern Thailand and looking back on the damage and responses in neighboring river basins, and preparedness and cooperation against increasing climate disasters in the region and beyond. On the second day, discussions focused on the activities of China, Japan, the United States and international organizations. In the final session, the importance of continuing communication through track 2.5 for future collaboration was confirmed.
