APL (Ajiken Power Lunch)

APL (Ajiken Power Lunch) is a lunchtime workshop open to public, including IDE staffs, visiting research fellows, IDEAS students, outside researchers and graduate students. This workshop provides a platform for presentation of any work in progress where we can discuss in either English or Japanese.

Those who would attend a seminar are asked to announce yourself to receptionists on your arrival at the IDE and to obtain APL Organizers' signature on your admission card after the seminar.

Stories and Statistics: Social Identity, Life-Threatening Risks, the Study of Political Violence (Gunes Murat Tezcur) / Gender studies and socoal science (TBA) (Zeynep Kaya)

(Gunes Murat Tezcur) The presentation offers an overview of my research addressing the motives of individuals joining armed movements with a particular emphasis on the transnational Kurdish insurgency. This micro-level research, based on the collection of militant biographies using both open sources and in-depth interviews, espouses a mixed-method approach and identifies demographic characteristics and life experiences of individuals (not) joining an armed movement at significant personal risk.

This strategy combines observations at both individual and more aggregate levels (i.e., district, province, country) over several decades. It provides evidence for some conventional explanations, challenges others, and offers new theoretical perspectives about the decision to rebel informed by insights from behavioral economics.
