Interview Video of Dr. ROMANOVA Valentyna (Research Fellow, IDE-JETRO)
October 31, 2024
We are pleased to present the latest episode in the "Azibito" video series, introducing researchers at the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO). In Episode 9, we feature Dr. ROMANOVA Valentyna, a specialist in Ukrainian politics. Dr. Romanova earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and joined IDE-JETRO in 2023. Currently, her research focuses on how international engagement in Ukraine's reconstruction can succeed. Specifically, she studies how foreign donors have contributed to the reconstructing of kindergartens in Ukraine.
Dr. Romanova has published a book examining decentralization in Ukraine and its impact on the country’s politics. Although Ukraine is a diverse country and decentralization was initially feared to weaken national unity, her findings conclude that it actually contributed to strengthening cohesion.
In this video, Dr. Romanova discusses her current research projects and recent publications. She also shares insights from interviews conducted with Japanese municipalities such as Yokohama City and Hyogo Prefecture, involved in supporting Ukraine’s recovery. Additionally, she reflects on her journey to becoming a researcher and the network of Ukrainian researchers active in Japan.
