Joint International Symposium

"New Horizons of East Asian Integration: How to Create Synergies between Economic and Socio-Cultural Aspects?"

East Asia including the Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN) will continue to be a main driving force for the world economy in the 21st century. The next challenge for this region is to make fruits of economic development expand widely and to create a more resilient, robust, and stable society. In spite of the optimistic anticipation that this region will achieve high or upper- middle income levels, it is necessary to seriously consider how to "leave no one behind" form economic prosperity. Both academia and policymakers need to present measures not only to accelerate economic development, but also to realize the aforementioned conformable society for all people who aspire to be given an opportunity to enjoy quality of life.

The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) has provided fundamental research about economic integration, narrowing development gaps, and sustainability to establish both the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) by clarifying challenges and possible policy actions. Among other things, the ASCC is getting much more important because it has a close relation with people’s daily lives and deals with a variety of issues arising from the diversity of ASEAN. Amidst economic integration, addressing challenges raised by the ASCC is definitely indispensable for further progress of the AEC that intends to integrate diversified ASEAN.

This symposium particularly discusses creative industry promotion, industrial competitiveness, and the Forth Industrial Revolution, aimed at generating synergies among academia, policymakers, and private sectors, in creating instructive policy recommendations.
