研究所内外における研究者が研究成果、研究活動の中間発表を行うほか、発表者と参加者、あるいは参加者相互のディスカッションを行います。テーマ、講師に応じて日本語あるいは英語での発表、議事進行となります。

The eradication of female genital cutting (FGC), anecdotally considered to be required for a proper marriage in Africa, may not necessarily be welfare-improving if FGC induces efficient matching in marriage. This study investigates whether stopping FGC reduces female marriageability. It hypothesizes that influence of Burkina Faso's FGC-discouraging political efforts permeated borderlands of its neighboring countries due to across-border social interactions and the resulting knowledge spillover. Consistently, the rate of FGC swiftly declined in the borderlands. However, this external policy shock had limited influence on a range of young women's marital outcomes. The cutting rates also exhibited a sharp discontinuity across communities and the community-level heterogeneity greatly explained the variation of FGC. All these findings are consistent with a game-theoretic social-norm model of FGC and thus, imply a social change from FGC to no-FGC equilibrium, wherein all females in a community are (are not) cut in the former (latter). As this equilibrium shift keeps marital couples randomly matched regarding FGC, stopping FGC would not reduce social welfare from the mating perspective. Community-level interventions would effectively eradicate FGC and its effectiveness may improve by identifying the norm-supporting mechanisms in future experimental research.
