Constitutional Revisions and Politics in Sub-Saharan Africa

Outline

In this research project, we examine the revisions of constitutional law in Sub-Saharan African countries to evaluate its effects and significances on the politics. This project consists of country-based case studies and comparative studies of all the African counties. Country-based study reviews the political, institutional, procedural and philosophical meanings for each of the cases of revisions in targeted country to detect the cases which has larger political significance. Of theses selected cases, we investigate what effect they have on institutionalization of the state, authoritarian or democratic quality of the political regime, power struggles among political actors and several basic requirements to modern state such as order, stability, national integration and state-building. In comparative studies, we investigate what major trends have been observed on the continental level. By these studies, we shed light on the political function of constitutional revisions in Sub-saharan African countries.
